Description

Extraordinary sculptural bookworks and visual literature by a pioneering contemporary artist who changed the way people think about books.

Richard Minsky is known for his conceptual approach to the book as an art object. He combines a background in economics with an innovative use of traditional methods and new materials to create sculptural, often political, bookworks. Minsky's blending of an eclectic mix of interests, from musical and theater performance to social issues and virtual worlds, remains a hallmark of his career.

This is an artist's book, designed by Minsky with an autobiographical introduction and descriptive texts about each work. Not only a gorgeous picture book with over 100 full-color photographs, this volume informs the artworks with the evolution of the artist from a 13-year-old printer in 1960 to a leader of the Book Art Movement. It showcases Minsky's unique works in private and institutional collections as well as his editioned multiples.

About the Author

Richard Minsky's work is collected internationally by major museums and libraries. He is the founder of the Center for Book Arts in New York City (1974), which has mounted over two hundred exhibitions during the past thirty-six years and offers a hundred classes and workshops. He has taught and lectured at many universities and art schools. In 2010 Yale University, repository of The Richard Minsky Archive, presented an exhibition of a half century of his work.

Betty Bright, Ph.D., is a curator and historian. She is the author of No Longer Innocent: Book Art in America, 1960-1980 (Granary Books, 2005), the definitive study of this seminal period. She contributes the foreword to The Book Art of Richard Minsky, looking at Minsky's work in the context of the field of book art.

Praise For…

Across a nearly half-century career, and counting, Minsky has produced a steady flow of bound volumes infused with anger, wit and passion. Expertly crafted, they transform workmanship into artistry by the ideas they embody and the propulsive energy of their maker. …The Book Art of Richard Minsky deserves a place on every book arts shelf. It brings us up to date with, and up close to, the career, still active, of an essential book artist. The photographs are clear, bright, inclusive and abundant.
