Language Programs in the Public Schools is a clearly defined answer to a recog­nized need of English teachers in the public school system who have neither the time, opportunity, nor resources to explore new ways of exciting students about their own language through teaching the principles of language arts. Summarizing the theoretical and prac­tical facets of English-language teach­ing that have emerged from extensive research in their particular areas are Jewell A. Friend on ‘The English Lan­guage,” “Lexicography,” “Dialect­ology,” and “Grammar”; J. N. Hook on “General Pedagogy”; Donald Nemanich on “American English Lan­guage”; and Alan Lemke on “Seman­tics.”
