Published to commemorate the centennial of The American-Scandinavian Foundation, Luminous Modernism accompanies a recent exhibition at Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America that sought to reflect on and update the Foundation's first-ever exhibition, the highly influential Exhibition of Contemporary Scandinavian Art, held in 1912-1913. The original exhibition comprised 150 works by many of the leading artists working in Denmark, Norway and Sweden at the turn of the twentieth century. Luminous Modernism brings together 48 works by Harriet Backer, Richard Bergh, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Vilhelm Hammersh i, Jean Heiberg, Otto Hesselbom, Eug ne Jansson, Ludvig Karsten, Nils Kreuger, Christian Krohg, Edvard Munch, Lauritz Andersen Ring, Erik Theodor Werenskiold and other Scandinavian modernists.
